I'll second the Auto Duck recommendation. If you go through the process of exporting individual scenes in Avid or FCP, and then re-creating your timeline in AE just one time, the $500 price tag doesn't seem so outrageous.

I've tried the creative-workflow script and the popcornisland script. They both worked OK for me on basic cuts.
The Magnum scene detector has worked well for me but can be slow. The longer your clip the longer it takes.
Since making that presentation I've run into some unexplainable problems with the scripts or didn't want to wait for the Magnum Scene Detector to work. I've picked up Automatic Duck and it is by far the best solution out there. If you make your money working in FCP and AE to me it's up there as a required plug-in. The other scripts can get you there but you're on your own for trouble shooting.
