One thing that I was able to get working for backup purposes was purchase a USB 2.0 empty chassis and place a BluRay burner inside it. I can now use it as a portable backup device as sometimes I use my laptop and may need something on a BD-ROM. With discs running as low as >$1 a disc for 25GB of backup media I just had to make that jump to store my projects.
