My backup solution isn't quite as thorough as Stephens (although now that I think about it, it should be). One thing that I was able to get working for backup purposes was purchase a USB 2.0 empty chassis and place a BluRay burner inside it. I can now use it as a portable backup device as sometimes I use my laptop and may need something on a BD-ROM. With discs running as low as >$1 a disc for 25GB of backup media I just had to make that jump to store my projects. I currently use a NAS that backs things up weekly (more frequently when the workstation is in full swing however).

Backup is a strategy, a plan and a process. I do the following:

(1)    Image system/boot drives nightly

(2)    Mirror application/file data across my machines multiple times daily

(3)    Increment/save project files

(4)    Mirror all data to RAID 5 server stores nightly

(5)    Backup that data as much off site as possible – the new twist is the Time Warner upgraded speed to support 5 Mb/s uploads and currently uploading 4TB to Crashplan to see if that’s feasible for additional offsite storage. Initial backup obviously will take a couple of months but after that should keep speed.

(6)    Own advanced undelete and recovery file utilities that support RAID recovery, removable media recovery etc. – these have saved my bacon as well as for colleagues several time.

A film is – or should be – more like music than like fiction. It should be a progression of moods and feelings. The theme, what’s behind the emotion, the meaning, all that comes later.
