I can't think of any other software I use where I'm forced to upgrade at each new release, basically it's subscription by stealth. Plus the cost of Adobe software in Australia is nearly twice the cost as the US so it's not a trivial expense like it is in the US, especially if you take into account any 3rd party software or hardware you have to upgrade to take advantage of a new release.

Having said that, given I pay a significant premium for my "perpetual" license because I live outside the US, the subscription pricing if applied worldwide in US dollars would be quite attractive to me, although given Adobe's previous form in this area I expect the subscription pricing here in Australia will be 60-100% more expensive than the US.

I can say, though, that this may change. Adobe have bunked up on it and communicated their policies so poorly, they need to do something about it. I can't be more specific due to NDAs.

I was just told from a couple of friends that I need to buy 5.5 before buying the CS6 upgrade when it is released (most likely in 2012). I was planning that Adobe would honor it’s usual route of adding another $200 to the upgrade cost from a step behind the curve. I.E. $599 to upgrade from CS4 to CS 5.5 vs $399 for the CS5 to CS 5.5 upgrade. Is that the case? If so I best be buying before end of year I guess.
