Erratic is relative I suppose :) it's all about expectations. If I've had too much egg nog then you should expect me to start spontaneous singing, snoring, dancing or some combination of the above. You probably wouldn't expect me to begin calculating Pi to the 72nd digit.
That said, if animating the amplitude works then that seems like a valuable solution. Does it work with more than the default 1 octave?
