If the subscription lapses, you only have any app you happened to have bought that has the perpetual license. For example, I am at CS5. If I go the subscription route, I will be kept up to date with any updates/upgrades as long as I subscribe. If I drop the subscription, the only thing I have is CS5. You could buy the app and subscribe. In my case, I'd spend about the same to go Production Premium CS6 as a year subscription, but the subscription gets all in the Master Collection plus the new cloud items.
