This is what I believe:
You buy the app (i.e. the perpetual license) OR the subscription. If the
subscription lapses, you only have any app you happened to have bought that
has the perpetual license.
For example, I am at CS5. If I go the subscription route, I will be kept up
to date with any updates/upgrades as long as I subscribe. If I drop the
subscription, the only thing I have is CS5.
You could buy the app and subscribe. In my case, I'd spend about the same to
go Production Premium CS6 as a year subscription, but the subscription gets
all in the Master Collection plus the new cloud items.
