Kudos to the creation of this piece!
Great texturing, animation and style!
However I'm not so sure about the human characters, who imho do not succeed in creating rapport with the viewer.
In my eyes they are not quite sympathetic, their facial features and body proportions need some tweaking..
But again this is my personal view and it might have been decision not to get them so unrealistically cute.

Agreed Greg. I spent some time with Dan this year and he left a lasting impression. He is very talented, a bit of a renaissance man really. He is a talented illustrator, animator, musician, he is also quite comfortable with coding and he is also one of the nicest guys I have ever met. It always seems to work out that way... the most talented people that I have met also happen to be very grounded and humble.
We are trying to put together an interview with him. He has a very interesting background, I think it will make for a great watch.

Truly deserved the honors. It's a great piece that shines with character in such a boring subject matter. The sound design also really makes this piece shine. I remember seeing test renders of his puppet rig a long time back and knowing it was going to be awesome.
I only wish some of my clients had the foresight to understand how cool a piece could be(like this one) if they just take a little risk and bring it in a different direction than the standard.
