Here are some more details about the passing of our dear friend Richard Lainhart.
Following a lovely Christmas party on December 17th, Richard complained of stomach pains. A visit to the doctor led to some tests which ultimately revealed that Richard had developed intestinal cancer. He went into surgery on December 21, and while the doctors discovered that the cancer had not spread, there were complications which led to a severe infection, and then pneumonia. He lost his life on December 30th, shortly after 4pm.
His wife Caroline, together with some friends, are arranging a memorial service which will likely be held in mid-February, close to his birthday.
Caroline has suggested a few ways you might honor Richard, if you choose:
- Plant a tree.
- Feed the birds.
- Tell us how you know Richard, and something you remember about him.
- Make a donation in Richard's name to one of the following organizations:
(Hi-Tor also has a Facebook page if you would like to follow them; they are a terrific, compassionate organization.)
The West Branch Conservation Association
100 South Mountain Road, New City NY 10956
(They are protecting the woods and cultural history of the area around their house, which he loved so much.)
And if I may be presumptuous and add an item to Caroline's list:
- Please have a colonoscopy if you are over the age of 50.
Thank you all for your messages of love and support. Richard's reach was truly global, and the outpouring of admiration, well-wishes and fond memories has been a great comfort to his family and friends.
