Weird.

But then the process to merge them is actually pretty simple.  Make a 32-bit comp and just stack the histogram slices on top of each other using Add mode.  Then you can color correct the combined result to your liking.

The last question is the gamma.  I would think that each movie was getting a gamma correction after part of the histogram was isolated.  In this case, assign your comp a linear color space and AE should automatically do the rest.
