Another method would be to use solids to create the faces of the cube, and use the beam effect for the edges. You'd place nulls at each vertex, then use beam with a toComp effect to have them 'follow' the 3d positions. In this way, it'd behave like a 3d object, responding to your lights, camera and any action. A while back I set up a rig for a diamond in this style, with all sorts of things adjustable.
