Here's an AEP for this example.

Whipped it up rather quickly, so it's lacking any sort of position/sizing/advanced controls, but with a setup like this you can change the contents of the faces as they're each in a precomp, and you can change the line/beam settings (even go so far as to animate them) using a main controller layer.

How crazy are you willing to get?

Another method would be to use solids to create the faces of the cube, and use the beam effect for the edges. You'd place nulls at each vertex, then use beam with a toComp effect to have them 'follow' the 3d positions. In this way, it'd behave like a 3d object, responding to your lights, camera and any action.

A while back I set up a rig for a diamond in this style, with all sorts of things adjustable. While it's not quite ready to be released, here's a still of how it look(ed/s)-- zacklovatt.com/drop/diamond_beam-cornerpin.jpg

I'm working in house and I'd have to make a persuasive case to buy any
non-native plugins. I thought about 3d stroke, but then i realized i
wouldn't be able to get the semi-transparent effect, where the far
edges are visible through the blue faces of the cube.. Same for Plexus
-- the limitation of these plu-ins being that they don't do
overlapping/depth/intersection with other layers. I think for the
time-being i'll have to stick with simple planes.
