Honestly, a lot of times I just go ahead and trim to work area. Nothing past the end gets lost. The layers don't even trim down. Once you're done with what you needed just go to the comp settings and set the length back to what you need.
Only issue would be if you create new layers as they would be trim to the new length.
Also this may not work so well if the beginning is getting trimmed, but you can still set the length back to original and then just select all layers and drag them all right until everything lines up again at the start. It's not perfect, but it only takes a few extra steps to make happen and it's on to the next task before you know it. ////Greg Balint ///Art Director / Motion Graphics Designer I've wanted this forever.
