Thanks for weighing in on that Jim,

This ease of platform transition is an important development for our industry.

I also appreciate having frank conversations with developers about the performance they are seeing on a give platform. For example, I have seen numerous benchmarks, and had conversations with developers that have noted that functions such as CUDA and OpenGL are simply higher performance, and drivers receive far more frequent updates on Windows. That alone may not be a reason to make a platform switch, but it's certainly grist for the mill.

Fwiw… most of us software companies, including Adobe, are pretty good about letting you move from one platform to another. Many companies, including us, offer cross platform serial numbers. So at least you don’t need to buy the software all over again.

If you think it’s likely you’ll switch to Windows at some point in the near future, you may want to download the trial Windows versions of the software you own and tuck them away. In some cases it’s difficult to download old versions of software, so if you need to switch you can do so without being forced to upgrade or trying to find the right person at a given company that will send you an old link.

Great post, Carey.  This is a subject I've been following with great interest.  I run a small shop in Toronto, and without going too far into detail - without buying very much - we spent about $19K on Apple pro products alone, another $6K or so in memory, accessories, etc., for our Mac Pros, and I won't even get into software, cables, other junk we need to connect up all of the toys.  This was a building year, so we might be ok for a couple of years with a bunch of what we have (but not all of it), but if Apple drops the pro market altogether it's going to be a terrifying, wildly expensive time.  Forget cool new Thunderbolt toys this year - we're sticking with what we have on the computer and peripheral side and staying extra cautious with our cash in the event we need to buy $11K Z800s.

Sigh.

Yeah, but can you imagine how employees felt when SoftImage got sold to Avid? Their retirement had looked so golden, and now... :-)
