I appreciate this discussion although I'm not too convinced any desktop / graphics-card-connected display can be calibrated to give me the rec 709 color reference I need for my broadcast work...but I am willing to be persuaded!

This may seem like a minor point, but as someone who has been using a 30" monitor (Apple Cinema) (2560 x 1600) for about 5 years (last replaced 2010), I'm wondering what the impact of moving to the more common 27" size (more affordable) of 2560x1440 would do to my work. In editing, mixing, AE etc I tend to really use the "height" of the monitor to view tracks. There is a 160 pixel difference in height. Anybody gone through this? Productivity hit? Manageable?

I am having success with the new Dell 27" monitors (u2711). They come pre-grayscale balanced for 6500k from the factory with a calibration print out.  I bought both of my monitors from Dell for $749 shipped.

Only comment I would make... when 1st new, the monitors did make some noise on certain images, a very quiet whistle/buzzing sound.  But that has stopped after about 20 hours of use.

Good luck with your search.

Only 24” but the HP Dreamcolor is about the only monitor that is pretty decent for both. I think there is quite of bit of info on ProVideo Coalition about using it as a reference monitor.

A film is – or should be – more like music than like fiction. It should be a progression of moods and feelings. The theme, what’s behind the emotion, the meaning, all that comes later.

Subject: [AE] [OT] Best monitor for graphics?

Hi all, looking into getting 2x new 24 - 30 inch monitors, and wanted to know what the current favorites are. Not into getting a cinema display either. Is there anything on the market that functions as both a standard graphics monitor and a high-end reference monitor? Are there any LCD options that have such good color depth you could fake it with good calibration? Does anyone use displayport or hdmi over DVI? I have an Eizo Coloredge CG222W that does a pretty good job at filling that role, but I'm getting a new system and don't want to drop another couple grand on one monitor. I don't need SDI or broadcast monitoring per se, just something that's as neutral as possible and has lots of color control and good brightness. Any suggestions welcome many thanks,
-TG
