Make sure and check minimum system requirements. As I recall FCP6 does not work on Lion, so you would have to stay with OSX 10.6.8.
Apple recommends installing FCPX on a separate partition, but in practice FCP7 and FCPX coexist just fine (I've been using both here for awhile). I assume FCP6 would be fine too, but Google will probably help here. You cannot have both versions open at the same time. There is a specific way of installing as FCP7 and FCPX have the same name:

There is a $10 app that gets you from FCP7 to FCPX via XML. I assume that it doesn't work for FCP6 but you can check with the developer.
