So i am not sure what people do or don't do, but for me, lion is by far the fastest most stable OS to date for me. So many improvements overall, and it just works. Maybe because i take a bit of time to set up my machine clean from scratch, only run combo updates, never delta updates thru software update for system updates. I have talked to apple quite a few times about this thru apple certification courses, and they recommend combo updates if any problems arise ever, so take what you will from that! i am in your area david, went to your training on expressions for AE last year, and i can always help you with some stuff for set up if you need.
