That actually use to be a popular method to do background rendering, until Lloyd's script came along. :)

Just wanted share this nifty After Effects/Mac trick I picked up this week.

Want to keep working in AE while waiting for a render to complete?

I was watching another editor versioning titles for a promo with AE on a MacPro. He set one version of titles to render then launched a SECOND application of AE on the same machine and proceeded to work on the next set of titles while the first set was rendering.  He continued to bounce between the two AE applications as each set of renders completed.

The trick?  He had simply DUPLICATED the AE program in the Applications folder. With two separate short cuts in the dock linked to each copy of AE, he was able to run two versions of the same AE at the same time. The only complaint the Mac had with the second launch was that “the Application had moved”. Ignore this warning and you're good to go. Who knew? Maybe you did but it was a wow moment for me.
