ya it could entirely be their monitor and its settings... and anything else they may be doing to it. 

on what monitor from what output are they pronouncing banding problems ?

Thanks for your suggestions about debanding. I'm at a bit of a loss now as I'm working remotely so not seeing it on the same monitor as the Avid editor (looks pretty nice to me on my 22" Dell flat screen;-p. He said there were still issues with my renders that used either Sapphire Debander or PHYX Deband plugins. So I've tried again and bumped up the Noise level. I'm working 32 bit. I also rendered the most promising version as an uncompressed Tiff sequence fwiw. Thanks!
