In Ae prefs>Audio Hardware, set Default Device to whatever you use for system sounds (Built-in Line Output, etc.)

Ignore the Adobe installed Audio Devices in AudioMIDI Setup.  Don't check any boxes for now.

Your System sounds will be routed to the device that has the little Mac, speaker and microphone icons to the right.
