It hasn't failed me before, and I don't it was the culprit here. My client has a new drive ready for me, and I'll soon know for sure if the formatting was bad. That's my suspicion. Apple Disk Utility saw it as a Mac OS Extended drive, and Drive Genius thought it was NTFS. That suggests to me that something was wrong with the disk, not my computers.
