I think you can also hold the option or shift button on launch to delete prefs. Not sure which or even if this applies to Ae. One of them does for Pr.
When you get your prefs working again to your satisfaction, zip them. Then you can easily restore a working set next time you need to zap them.
I keep an alias to the Ae prefs folder on my desktop. They seem to get corrupted pretty easily.
