Sounds like overkill. I'd suggest rendering at half res and reimporting anything over 720p. Downres your psds and import as tif or png. You won't notice a difference. And 8 gb ram can quickly get choked by RED and large prores renders. Clean up your project. Whoah. Try turning off = disk caching completely. It's possible there's a bug with the prefe= rence or some other subtlety, but this isn't something I've seen be= fore.
