Hi Teddy,
One question to ask yourself: When studios hire you, is it to fill a seat or is it for a turnkey animation? If it's to fill a seat then I would probably suggest keeping on with Maya since that seems to get the lion's share of requests. If it's more of a turnkey type of solution I would look more towards a package that you can easily get the whole thing done in.
Two apps to add to the pile of contestants would be Lightwave 3D (now v.11) and Modo which just released version 601. I used to be a lightwave person but I'm seriously thinking of letting my "hardcore" membership lapse as I only have a finite amount of energy to put into a 3D app. I am currently playing around with Cinema which takes some getting used to but it seems pretty robust.
