Xsi get used a lot for character animation in commercials, see it all the time. Aardman uses it for sure.
Lightwave3D with LWcad see it a lot in archviz, the VPR renderer. Terra Nova also used LightWave albeit as a renderer.
But both sometimes feel like after effects if you call after effects a compositing package compared to Nuke IMO
But back to the original question, if you already have maya skills why not just expand that?
If you need a cheaper 3d package then choose something else.
If you just want to learn a new package then houdini''s starving artist package is nice.

I haven't heard anyone mention XSI or Lightwave for about 10 years.
