Awww, I can't believe the bad wrap compound blur is getting on this thread!

Ain't no better solution for controllin' the diffusion.  Seriously though, I use it all the time to blur out footage I'm comping behind smoke, fire, clouds, blurry reflections and other diffusive effects.  It's the best!

Also, Grow Bounds can be made to work with Compound Blur in many situations but you'll have to make sure that the layer you're using to drive the blur has information outside the bounds of the layer you're blurring (and that Stretch Map To Fit is Off).  For example, if the layer you're blurring is 100x100 and you want to Grow Bounds by 50px, then you'll need a 200x200 layer to drive the blur (with a 50px gray fill around the border).

For depth of field or other lens based blurring it's definitely not the right tool.

Although that's a valid suggestion, the edges is the least of Compound Blur's problems - it's pretty ugly, period (smile). It's really worth using an alternative.
