Thanks, Trish, for the tip. On this particular job, I often had to render out only a portion of a layer's duration, then render the next section, and so on. Having to change the work area to a custom area is time consuming. It would be great to have a preference that allowed a work area selection to become a custom area automatically or just be able to click once instead of four times to make a custom area.

in case you missed this shortcut for setting the work area

Set work area to duration of selected layers or, if no layers are selected, set work area to composition duration

Ctrl+Alt+B

Command+Option+B
