Thanks, Trish, for the tip. On this particular job, I often had to render out only a portion of a layer's duration, then render the next section, and so on. Having to change the work area to a custom area is time consuming. It would be great to have a preference that allowed a work area selection to become a custom area automatically or just be able to click once instead of four times to make a custom area.

Set work area to duration of selected layers
or, if no layers are selected, set work area to composition duration Ctrl+Alt+B Command+Option+B
