| I assumed I was just having a stupid moment, and that the solution was obvious. Precompose each layer (moving all attributes into the new composition); I forgot that all layers have to be the same size in order to keep alignment. Blend effect applied to each layer. "Blend with layer" set to other layer. Use CrossFade mode. Blend with Original mediates the transition between the two layers. I'm doing some traditional animation, so in this particular case, one layer is blending (dissolving) to the 2nd, then the second blends to a third, etc. So I just split the 2nd layer halfway through, and changing the blend with layer from the first to the third (and third set to 2nd).
