if you want to _seriously_ run resolve, you need dual nV cards. while the GTX285 still seems to be a strong performer, you can't get it from apple. there are 480's and 580's on ebay that have been flashed with mac firmware which seem to work fine, but you can only get them on ebay....  do you work with a local dealer / VAR ? maybe do the purchase thru them instead and config the machine the way you want.

while resolve does use OpenCL on the ATI cards, its about 1/2 the level of performance. that means non RT playback once you get past 2 or 3 nodes... depending on what you are doing. my iMac with ATI GPU runs ok, but its not anything close to the mac with dual GPU's.

Q4000's aren't that expensive, I think $800 or $850 thru apple. the older QFX4800 was $1600 or so.

also don't forget that adobe PP uses CUDA which will make your world happy. any of these  nV cards will work well with PP

If it's a Mac Pro, and there are no nVidia options available, get the cheapest ATI option, then by all means don't get the RAM from Apple, get it from a third party and put it in yourself. You'll save hundreds of dollars that you can put towards an nVidia card, replacing the cheap ATI card. Someone else on the list can probably recommend something cheaper than the Quadra 4000 that will serve you well. A decent nVidia game card (GTX 480, GTX 580) will really rock the CUDA, if the Mac Pro supports it. Sorry if your IT department is inflexible about this... Apple could certainly make it easier by offering more options.

I'd say spend it on R

AM. Unless you play a lot of video games. RAM is going to give a much better overall boost to your system & rendering

Or should I spend the money on RAM?

I would like the system to possible work with Resolve or Adobe's new SpeedGrade (which I do not know that much about).

Of course, I will be running two screens.

Thanks!
