Unless I've missed something, the massive downside to having a render farm (especially for one man shops like myself) is the new render license requirements of one copy of AE per render node. Of course if Adobe were to offer render node expansions on their Creative Cloud it would make for a much better arrangement.
The only reason I can think of owning a iMac is if you have a heaping helping of Mac specific software or you have a small footprint and you need to put an all-in-one there like the iMac. OSX is a lovely OS (and I would be first in line if Apple ever releases it for non Apple specific hardware) but since Apple jumped into bed with ATI for their video cards it makes you jump through some significant hurdles if you want a Premiere Pro friendly workstation. Back on topic though, I do know several people who do buy a smaller iMac or MacBook Pro for their Mac needs and do a fair chunk of work on a cheaper PC system with similar qualities to an iMac by using those Dell Ultrasharp monitors. Not sure how they work out licenses but there's an option for you there.
