2 questions on my mind.
#1, the render node licensing issue being fixed. Does this mean certain output types have been removed to make this possible? I.e. h.264, etc?
Also. Can anyone clue me in if there's a limit to how many 3d layers can be shown in one comp? And how do separate 3d layers interact when they take up the same space. Pretty much like a 3d program? Or are there odd intersections that happen due to 2 3d items bumping into each other? I.e can I build larger models in AE from simpler extruded shapes? ////Greg Balint ///Art Director / Motion Graphics Designer
Exactly ! And you can convert Illustrator layers into shapes too ! 2012/4/12 Brian Maffitt <brian@totaltraining.com>
Well, the text and shapes stay live, so if you know how to use text animators and shape goodies like repeaters, there is a lot of fun stuff you can do here.
Brian Only Texts and shapes. So if you need to create 1980 extruded logo look, it's going to be perfect ;)

Also curious: does the new 3d engine handle actual 3d imports from maya like nuke, or is it only for vector objects like text and shapes?
I would like to add my voice on the new caching system, which is not only super hot, it's for me the #1 feature of this release (yes yes, above Mask feathering ;) ). It never felt so good to work in AE. Opening your AE project in the morning and having it instantly load all your cached frames, previous ram previews is just amazing. It's somehow a coffee break killer. A lot of intelligent background caching also makes it work like a charm, and fast.
Sure a lot of new features extend the scope of AE in CS6, such as Mask feathering, powerfull 3D camera tracker, the first steps into raytracing and real 3D world, but whereas these features will help you do more work inside AE, the new caching will allow everyone to work faster and more effectively.
And the gap in productivity is bigger with Hash Cache than when we switched to 64bit. That is to say I'm definitively upgrading when it get released. Cheers, Seb

Well we can talk about CS6, apparently. I just received a notification. AE CS 6 has many exciting new features, most notably a 3D camera tracker which allows for the tracking of footage, creating cameras that correspond to the footage and the subsequent placement of text and other elements in 3D space.
Another great feature is native 3D in AE which includes extruding and bevelling AE text, creating environment maps and importing vector objects such as illustrator files and converting them to extruded objects right inside an AE comp.
While there are other 3D plug in solutions for 3D objecta, AE CS6 allows for these native 3D elements to truly be integrated with AE lights, cameras, layers, etc, unlike plug ins.
A nifty hash cash disk cashes layers making AE more of a real time machine, quickly recalling data for layers, even restoring a previous ram preview instance by undoing back to a previously ram preview situation.
I've been running CS 6 in heavy production and it is very stable and I'm excited to let other AE users know that it's coming soon.
