Read the contract carefully.

Are they licensing the characters? Or just the use of the very short animation?  How are they going to use it?  Do they have the right to edit it?

Are they in any way going to impede on your right to ever use these characters again (if that's important).

Is it exclusive or nonexclusive?  Will you be indemnified?  Are there any running banana characters that have been licensed for example?

Make sure whatever you sign you have looked over by an attorney.

I think you or they know that the music will have to be replaced.

Sorry, but It seems a little too good to be true.

I would say proceed with caution with the standard caveats. Make sure whatever they send for payment is legitimate and keep track of what you get paid at least for IRS fun stuff. Always Cover Your Ass ;).

Hey everyone.

Quick question about selling rights to an animation I produced.

The animation in question is here:
http://vimeo.com/7049421

I created the animation to submit to the Greyscale Gorilla 5 second projects contest. It was just a fun little thing I made and I won the contest.  I own the rights to everything in the video except for the music select.

I was just approached by a German production company creating a commercial for VODAFONE.  They are requesting to license the rights to use the 5 seconds of footage for 1 year for all media in Germany.  They've offered 1000€ for the rights.

I received this message through Vimeo's message system, not directly.

I was wondering if anyone on the list has ever had the experience of doing this and if there's anything I should be cautious about.

I'm flattered that this video I've created is being considered for use like this. Especially since it was just a little fun project to make on a whim.   And $1,300 USD out of nowhere, for something I never expected to get paid for, definitely sounds great to me.

Let me know your thoughts.

Thanks!
