You can always opt for the "traditional" license mode, in which case whatever version you last owned would continue to function. Of course discounted upgrades would only apply to to the next version, but it too wouldn't expire. But incremental updates and bug fixes only come with with the cloud version, so the actual decision is not all so easy.
In the end I suppose it's pay in full now, or pay over time but in any case you have to pay.
