My reasoning is simply that if you stop paying the monthly subscription at any time you effectively lose everything except your actual data files, and if I happen to have an internet fault at the time the licence is checked online I can't use the software until the fault is fixed. It also makes sense to keep a CS5.5 version available as CS6 will only be backwards compatible to that version apparently.
