That is no longer the case in CS6. The After Effects trial is the same as the licensed version.

While waiting for a serial number, you can download the software and run it for 30 days in free trial mode (took me about 2 hours to download this afternoon). Limitations include some codecs and third party plugins for AE are not activated until the software is registered, but at least you can get going in the interim.
