I am having a similar problem; older video that will not play: Black screen or a single frame - audio playing. I am using CS6 in Trial mode so I am presuming it may be locked codecs that will release when I get my magic serial number. I bought the 5.5 get CS6 free upgrade.
Are you working in ‘Trial mode’?
I did file a bug report yesterday with Adobe about this just in case I’m wrong. It is good to know it’s not just me.
Like you this is on a W7 system that screams using 5.5

Subject: [AE] MPEG-1/2 video not opening in AE CS6
I have a quick question/bug.
I am working with some .mpg footage that was converted to .mpg from a jvc evero gz hd7.
It's opening just fine in CS5.5, but won't open in CS6, both on the SAME win7 machine.
Here are the specs taken from VLC player:
Video:
Codec: MPEG-1/2 Video (mpgv)
Resolution: 1440x1080
FPS: 50
coded format: Planar 4:2:0 YUV
Audio:
Codec: MPEG Audio layer 1/2/3 (mga)
Channels: Stero
Samplerate: 48000 Hz
Bitrate: 384 kb/s
Anyone have the same problem, or solution? thx !
kind regards,
