There's also CC Particle World that comes with AE these days (under
Simulation in the Effect menu). Should be able to do bubbles reasonably
well.

Can't help with your issue, but I can empathize with the lack of support
from DE.  

I think they're putting all their resources into marketing these days.

You could consider using Particular, and make your own bubble sprite.
