Thanks Jim & Jim!
I did in end up using CC Particle World and would like to try Particular.
Digieffects responded today with no solution but want the project to reproduce the problem.
Also found out that Beserk and Aurorix have been discontinued and offered free Damage & Depth Cue.
Might have to save up for Particular I think.
