I read more on the thread after my initial post and Steve Oakley may be onto something with the Mac OS 10.7.4 update. I'd also like to add that with blue-cached frames (frames cached to disk), RT playback with the spacebar is also achievable. Of course, individual mileage depends greatly on the type of storage mechanisms used.
Premiere isn't really an option at this point, since I use FCP (and clients expect it).
<< Ah, but I thought I read that that was what you were doing to overcome AE's un-NLE-like playback mechanisms.
