To create a Shadow Catcher layer with CS6 (Ray-tracing Renderer) for pre-rendering or nesting purposes, you will need a 2D (YES 2D) White Solid at the bottom of your Timeline layer stack.
To emphasize, other than a white 3D solid which is used to ’catch’ the shadow an ADDITIONAL 2D white solid has to be in place. Many thanks to Steve Tiborcz of Adobe for his input on this. Obviously, I was only moments away from discovering the solution myself, if not for Steve's timely input. ;-)
This is a vastly different workflow relative to the Classic 3D Renderer or pre-CS6.

Subject: [AE] 3D solids / no blend mode?
So, previously, to get a shadow catcher I would position a 3d white
solid and switch the blend mode to multiply. Now, once the solid is
switched to 3D, it seems that the blend modes go away.
What gives? Anyone have a new method for shadow catchers in CS6?
Once again...thanks.
