In an RT comp, setting a layer to Accept Shadows Only, turns it black. This is when a 2D white solid is required, below the shadow catcher. FWIW, you can nest an RT Comp that acts as a shadow catcher into a Classic Renderer comp and use Blending Modes. I haven't pushed this workflow far enough to see what caveats lie ahead but for shadow catching, it seems to work fine.
A better option for a Shadow Catcher layer (in an RT comp)is to set Accept Shadows to On.

when you switch to the raytrace renderer a biog warning box comes up
telling you all the new dos and donts. blend modes arent supported
however you can set a layer as a shadow catcher by setting its shadow
attribute to receives shadow only
