Don't know, but had the same problem yesterday with images shot on an iPhone.  Probably something like AE ignoring metadata that other programs read.
The potential problem here is that you build a project based on the way that AE currently interprets the photos, and then if Adobe fix/change the behaviour in a future release then old projects will render differently.
