The potential problem here is that you build a project based on the way that AE currently interprets the photos, and then if Adobe fix/change the behaviour in a future release then old projects will render differently.
It could also be the specific app the images came from. A lot of them don't set the proper meta-data when saving and you get images oriented wrong.
