Sorry. My bad twice (!), it was AE 5, a version with features that mirrored the top 3 feature request poll from this list.
And yeah, if you're buying at the right time and don't mind a PC, Nvidia need not be expensive. I used a nice iMac and machines with a GTX 470, 550, 570, and 560M in the last year, but now left only with 560M. But I can live with Windows.

Nnnnot quite. After Effects version 5 is when it got 3D features. CS5 was actually AE version 10, and by then 3D had been around for quite a while.
CS5 is when AE got 3D features.
