It's generally a best practice to match the sticks according to your RAM channels that your motherboard supports. So if your mobo supports dual channel RAM, match them in equal pairs, or if triple channel, match in triplets. I'm sure someone else can provide more detail than that, but it's my understanding.

I'm setting up a new workstation from my spare MacPro3,1.  I turned down work this year, and have decided to bring in a freelancer to help me rather than do that again.

I have a 16 GB package arriving soon (4 x 4 G sticks).  Currently, that machine has 8 GB consisting of 2x2G sticks, and 4 x 1G sticks. (It has 8 slots for a max of 32G.)

Is there any downside to having four matched 4G sticks in the same machine as two 2G sticks and two 1G sticks?  I hardly see people listing 22G in their MacPro.

Does it matter?  As long as they're all 800 MHz ECC FB-DIMM:R, just different sizes?

TIA,
Jim C.
