Just to offer a balance to some recent opinions expressed here, I think
that characterizing CS6's ray-tracer as "messing up" and "unusable" is
inaccurate and unfair. I delivered an excellent broadcast commercial
incorporating gorgeous ray-traced 3D graphics THE DAY AFTER I downloaded
my CS6 upgrade.
Adobe personnel on this list have acknowledged that the initial release
of the CS6 ray-tracing engine is the first step
and there is more to do. Whatever frustrations you have with this
iteration, It would be productive to submit feature requests, as Todd
Kopriva has urged time and again, addressing whatever issues you have
with the function of their products. I intend to, even as I continue to
use the new features in a professional environment on a daily basis.
So for me so far, the ray-tracer has been useful and has performed
reasonably on a MacPro 3,1 with Q4000 GPU. It will not by any means
replace C4D, rather it is another tool that works very well in the
appropriate situation. Quite usable. That plus the new caching scheme
- not to mention improvements across the rest of the suite in PS, PP,
etc - made the investment in upgrading to CS6 feel like a good deal,
frankly.
