However for open EXR handling and stacking layers and merging hundreds of effects nodes, and building your own effects, AE has nothing on node-based compositing. But I see AE as the mastering suite to to these program's raw outputs. Doing any kind of frame specific "editing" and effects timing (especially to music or VO) is firmly in the AE domain.
