I am really really happy to see this feature, the 1920x1200 resolution of my 17 inch mbp is hard to read and I  can't imagine wanting to read much on a 15 inch screen at that size….

I'm not sure it'll help with that.  Things will look sharper on the retina display, but they won't be any bigger if size is what's making it hard for you to read things.  You can increase font sizes in many programs.  Or lower your screen resolution, although that will lead to things being less-sharp.

I think the 17" and 15" MacBook Pros had the same pixel density, just more real estate on the latter.  So reading would be the same, just with more scrolling on 15".

I always found it odd that many Windows laptops have 15-inch screens with 1920x1080 resolution, making many UI widgets absolutely tiny.  I think Apple is on the right track here, realizing that higher pixel density while maintaining the visible size of UI elements is the way to go.  And of course it's vital for touch-based interfaces like the iPhone and iPad, which look stunning.  I just hope someday they come out with an external 27" retina display.
