The “Near Vanish” should kick in before object get large although of course they disappear. For realism, don’t be afraid of size. In a real star field, massive distance separate the stars, which means the chance of any one being close to the camera.
Use large values (I’m currently working on building the universe inside After Effects for my film) – AE supports massive numbers (quintillion and more) – combined with a very wide angle lens, go near fish eye and you should not have the problem.
