Good post overall, Greg, but there is no such thing as an airtight contract, mostly due to the fact that you can't get money from a client who doesn't have it.

Getting a lawyer is usually a good idea for many kinds of contracts, largely because they have an E&O policy that covers both of you under certain conditions.  e.g., if you sell your house by-owner, at least get a real estate attorney to "bless" your paperwork.  Money well-spent.

Suing is only viable when the defendant still has assets, and the jurisdiction will enforce a judgement.  Attorneys (and collectors) work on a percentage, and won't waste their time if there's not a potential profitable payout in it for them.  Avoid lawsuits as much as possible.

If a client won't sign a contract, that should tell you something right there.  Run away.
